Oregon has significantly expanded civil remedies for survivors of sexual abuse over the past several years. Legislative changes have broadened the time during which survivors of childhood sexual abuse can bring civil claims, and in some circumstances the law recognizes that the trauma itself delays the ability to come forward. Beyond the individual perpetrator, civil claims often reach the institutions that enabled or ignored abuse (schools, churches, youth programs, medical providers, employers, residential facilities, and foster care systems) when they failed to protect the people in their care. These institutional claims are often where meaningful accountability and compensation come from.
