Sexual Abuse Survivor Legal Resources

9 articles from our library

If you are reading this, you have already taken a hard step, and we want you to know two things up front. What happened was not your fault, and you have legal options that are far broader than they were a decade ago. Over the past several years, many states have expanded their statutes of limitations for civil sexual abuse claims, created revival windows that temporarily reopen older cases, and made it easier to hold institutions accountable for abuse committed by people they employed, supervised, or placed in positions of trust.

Survivors often carry the belief that their case is too old, that no one will believe them, or that the abuser has no money to pay a judgment. In our experience, all three assumptions are frequently wrong. Many civil cases can still move forward years after the abuse occurred. Documentation and corroboration strategies have improved dramatically. And in many of the cases we handle, the financial recovery does not come from the abuser directly, but from a school, religious organization, youth program, healthcare provider, employer, or other institution whose negligent hiring, supervision, or cover-up enabled the abuse to happen or to continue.

George Goldberg has more than 32 years of civil litigation experience and our firm handles these cases with the care they deserve. Every intake is confidential. You decide what you are comfortable sharing and when. We will never pressure you to file a public lawsuit until you understand your options, and we work hard to preserve your privacy throughout the process, including the use of pseudonyms where the law permits.

Below you will find educational resources on how civil sexual abuse cases work, how revival windows function, how institutional liability is proved, and what to expect from the process. The FAQ covers questions survivors most often ask in a first call.

You do not have to decide anything today. When you are ready to talk, we are here, and everything you tell us is confidential. 1-888-352-9243

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my conversation with the firm confidential?
Yes. Communications with our firm for the purpose of seeking legal advice are protected by attorney-client privilege, and we treat intake calls as confidential from the first minute. You control what you share and when. Nothing is filed publicly without your informed consent.
Is it too late to file a civil claim for abuse that happened years ago?
Often, no. Many states have extended their statutes of limitations for civil sexual abuse cases, and some have opened revival windows that allow older claims to be filed regardless of the original deadline. The rules vary sharply by state and by the age at which the abuse occurred. Please let us review the specifics before assuming your time has passed.
Can I sue the organization, not just the abuser?
In many cases, yes. Schools, religious organizations, youth programs, treatment facilities, and employers can be held civilly liable when their negligent hiring, inadequate supervision, failure to respond to warnings, or active cover-up enabled the abuse. Institutional cases are often the only meaningful source of recovery.
Will I have to testify publicly or give my name in court?
Many jurisdictions permit survivors to proceed under a pseudonym such as Jane or John Doe, and most cases resolve without a public trial. We will explain every step and make sure you understand what is and is not required before any filing is made.
Do I need to have reported the abuse to police to bring a civil case?
No. A civil case for damages is separate from any criminal prosecution and does not require a prior police report, a conviction, or any criminal involvement at all. Civil cases also use a lower burden of proof than criminal cases.
What does it cost to talk to Goldberg & Loren?
Nothing. Consultations are free and confidential, and our sexual abuse cases are handled on a contingency fee basis, meaning you pay no attorney fees unless we recover on your behalf. There is no obligation to move forward after the first call.
